Paris-based Cinéma du Réel is one of the major documentary film festivals on the European circuit, benefiting from an established international scope. We actively believe in a broad, open-minded understanding of documentary cinema as a profoundly irreducible genre, one that can permanently challenge its own traditional borders, whatever the subject, length, format or form. We are looking for polymorphous – not to say “impure” non-fiction films, that defy categorisation and are constantly exploring new perspectives. We crave author-driven, singular, aesthetically committed works, proposing powerful, complex, sensitive, personal reinterpretations of the real through the prism of manifold expressive forms. We enthusiastically value narrative, cinematographic and formal risk-taking versus formatted, spectacular, or bland effective storytelling. Please note that only French premieres will be eligible for submission for the International Competitions (features, shorts, first films). Cinéma du Réel also organises a high-end professional section, ParisDOC, offering a blend of closed screenings, selected works-in-progress, round-tables, masterclasses and casual get-togethers.

Diego Mas Trelles
The festival was born for the purpose of strengthening and disseminating the documentary genre, in so far as it understood to be a reflection of the social, cultural, economic, artistic, environmental, and other realities that exist in the world. Our understanding of the documentary is based on a dual commitment. Firstly, a commitment to aesthetics, which shows how present day documentary filmmaking breaks new ground in its language and form, thus distancing itself for the most part from the standardized norms. Secondly, we are convinced that non-fiction work makes us all more aware of the need to change the world in order to improve it. Our most intimate calling, our dream, is that by opening some windows to the world in each screening, we make an audience member aware of an issue, and thereby make that person reflect on it, make the issue his/her own, and perhaps then… do something about it.
