10 Things I Hate About Shorts – a Hands-on Approach to What Programmers Love

Festivals are looking for new, innovative, touching and provocative films. That is what programmers select among the thousands of submissions they receive. But what are they NOT looking for – what turns them off? What will make a programmer dismiss a film as soon as the credits roll?

Moderated by Jing Haase from The Swedish Film Institute, this session will give a hint to filmmakers of how they can keep their films on the programmer’s radar and improve the festival run for their next film.

Archives of Oblivion

Archives of Oblivion – Photo: Thomas Romlöv

Archives of Oblivion is a suite of poems by Felicia Mulinari and Athena Farrokhzad written in dialogue with social movements about memory, grief and racist violence, with Malmö as the backdrop. Directed by Saga Gärde, the piece features an accompanying video portraying children and youth leaders, who perform the poem and examine the role of memory and forgetting in the anti-racist struggle.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between Athena Farrokhzad, Saga Gärde, and director Suvi West, whose film Homecoming (also screened at the festival) portrays the anticolonial struggle of returning Sámi artefacts from museums worldwide back to Sápmi. The discussion will connect Homecoming and Archives of Oblivion and explore themes such as the oppression of the voice of a collective, reclaiming the ownership of personal narratives and the transformation of a community’s memory culture.

Archives of Oblivion is originally a large-scale performance piece. The film screening on Sunday is an adaptation of the original piece made especially for Nordisk Panorama.

Tova Mozard’s Acclaimed Video Installation ILOVERUSS

ILOVERUSS – Photo: Tova Mozard

After captivating over 20.000 visitors at Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen and Cecilia Hillström Gallery in Stockholm, the acclaimed video installation ILOVERUSS by Tova Mozard arrives at Hypnos Theatre in Malmö.

In this multi-screen installation, we follow Tova Mozard and the struggling actor Russ Kingston in Hollywood over a 20-year period.

Mozard is a curious and caring observer of Russ’ whims and acts, in this multi-layered storyline that unfolds over time. At the same time, it feels like we are witnessing one special condensed moment between the two friends, acted out in a confidential space with room for quirkiness, vulnerability and raw emotions.

ILOVERUSS will be played on a loop throughout the festival. Free event.

Reframing Documentary: A Conversation with Göran Hugo Olsson

Director and producer Göran Hugo Olsson, known for works such as The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 and Concerning Violence, reflects on his 30 years of constantly redefining filmmaking.

Göran Hugo Olsson

The thread that runs throughout Olsson’s art is a profound respect for the artists he collaborates with and not least the main characters that become co-creators. By doing so Göran Hugo Olsson calls into question the cult of the individual auteur-genius, one who does everything on their own, but instead proposes that collaboration is the true basis of the artform.

Cecilia Lidin, one of this year’s festival programmers, moderates the conversation, where Olsson shares his approach to art, politics and activism in the past and the present.

Nordic Documentary Producer Award

The Nordic Documentary Producer Award will be given to a producer whose leadership, courage and willingness to take risks has helped ensure the development of emerging talents and advanced the documentary as an art form.

• Sara Stockmann, Denmark

• Liisa Karpo, Finland

• Sigurjón Sighvatsson, Iceland

• Ingvil Giske, Norway

• Tobias Janson, Sweden

X-rated femme-punk

SMiSK, an x-rated femme-punk band with heavy riot grrrl tendencies and sexually explicit lyrics, will take the stage at Festival Bar Brogatan. Infamous for their confrontational and anarchic live shows, this band will leave no one indifferent – some yearning for more and a whole lot scared shitless.

This iconic Malmö-based band was founded in 2016 and has since released two albums: Världens äckligaste rockgrupp (2021) and Salt i såren (2023).
