Tongue Cutters
Tungeskjærerne
Hidden between a row of fishermen gutting fish, standing on a floor awash with blood and intestines, Tobias (10) faces a big box filled with cod heads. With frightening speed he cuts out the tongues and hangs them on a nail. In northern Norway, many children are paid to work as cod tongue cutters. The tongues are a delicacy exported to countries like China and Japan. The tongue-cutter children start from the age of six.
