In Norway in the second world war, two young women - Jewish Ruth Maier from Vienna and the Norwegian poet Gunvor Hofmo - fell in love. After the war, Gunvor learned that her friend was killed four days after being deported. Gunvor tried in vain to get Ruth’s diaries published. Gunvor spent much of the rest of her life in a mental asylum but after her death Ruth’s diaries were discovered, showing Ruth to be the secret object of most of Gunvor’s poems.
