In the early 1920s, lead was added to gasoline to make the fuel more efficient. Even at that time, lead was known to be a poison, especially harmful to children. For 60 years, thousands of tonnes of lead have been spread into the air, damaging our IQs. Lead from gasoline has, literally, made a lot of us a bit dimmer.
