Iceland was a western democracy caught up in the Cold War. The United States had a military base there and Iceland was a member of NATO. Centre-right coalitions ran government and town councils across the country. With one exception: Neskaupstaður, a town of 1,500 people in the east of the country, where Socialists ran the show. They came to power in 1946 and kept it for 52 years.
