Beyond the Usual Suspects

Licensing opportunities and practicalities in digital distribution

Although the market is more challenging in 2024 for indie short- and documentary films, there is still an opportunity to sell to a wide range of VOD platforms, including an increased appetite for slightly older films (library, catalogue). Many non-exclusive deals are possible, across various regions and windows (tvod, svod, avod, and now FAST channels), going beyond just the Big Global players (Netflix/Amazon types) to midsized competitors and to selected complementary niche smaller platforms. Some of those lesser known platforms also are open to occasionally fund or co-fund Originals, including short form episodic storytelling.

In this session VOD expert and former lawyer Wendy Bernfeld of Rights Stuff will give an overview of the current evolving landscape, and various platforms to possibly sell to, and how to reach them, directly or indirectly. This also includes the different sorts of OTT streamer business models and windows (TVOD/ SVOD/AVOD/FAST and hybrid variations).
