Nordisk Panorama Pirate Radio at the Film Festival

There is something about radio that feels closely connected to film. Both are crafts built from voices, sounds, stories and ideas. Both are made by people who care deeply about what they are creating, and both have the ability to bring people together around something they might not otherwise have discovered.

This year, we here at Nordisk Panorama wanted to explore that connection by trying something new: creating our own radio station during the festival. More than simply another way of talking about the festival, we see the station as a collaborative creative experiment – a space that can be shaped by different voices from across Malmö.

Collaboration is at the heart of the project. We are working with Malmökanalen, part of Malmö’s long tradition of local, non-profit community radio, as well as the independent Malmö-based collective Retreat Radio. In addition, we have Malmö stad’s KulturCrew youths involved with the techy bit, and students from Malmö Latin are curating parts of the programming. Giving young people the space and opportunity to decide what belongs on the radio, and how they want to talk about cinema, feels especially important to us.

For Nordisk Panorama, the radio station is also about opening the festival up. We know that reaching new audiences is not only about asking more people to come to see a film. It is about creating different paths to the festival: informal spaces where people can encounter a filmmaker, a piece of music, a conversation or an unexpected idea. Our audience research has reinforced the importance of free and informal festival touchpoints, and of presenting Nordisk Panorama as a social and cultural experience that extends beyond the screen.

That is what makes this project exciting to us. It brings together a film festival, community radio, an independent radio collective, students, filmmakers, festival guests and audiences – people with different experiences and different ways of telling stories. Rather than knowing exactly what the result should be, we want this to feel experimental, exciting and new.

Throughout the festival, Nordisk Panorama Radio will be broadcasting 24/7. Hosting the radio is the exceptional Amila Cirkinagic, alongside a whole host of incredible talent and guests.
