How do we make room for more-than-human life?

Frost Without Snow and Ice follows the encounters between polar bear Frost, her cubs, and filmmaker Asgeir over more than a decade in a rapidly changing Arctic. Through this intimate story, the film opens a larger conversation about coexistence: as climate change, nature loss and expanding human activity leave other species with less space and fewer resources, encounters and conflicts increase.

But coexistence is often possible – sometimes through surprisingly simple changes in how we behave and share space. Starting with the film and the extraordinary story behind it, the conversation will explore filmmaking, our relationship with other species, practical ways of sharing space – and a deeper question: what changes when we see ourselves not as separate from nature, but as part of a more-than-human world?

  • 14:00 Interview with Amanda Seeberg and Andrea Vijgen Strøbæk, directors of Writing Life 

About the directors: Andrea Vijgen Strøbæk and Amanda Seeberg both studied TV and media production at the Danish School of Media and Journalism. They have both worked at SAND – the Danish organisation for homeless people working with video workshops and visual narratives where the idea for this film originated. This film is their debut documentary film. They have both produced several productions for television such as “Ulrikke uden skam”, 2020, TV2, co-directed with Alexander Lind, nominated for the Best Documentary Series at the Danish TV award. 

Synopsis: Kenni, Sabrina, Cille, Niklas and Sebastian’s life stories have been written by others – by doctors, social workers and correctional facilities. Words that reduce them to diagnoses, numbers and judgments. Now they are given the chance to tell their own story. Over the course of two months, they take part in a creative writing programme with author Trisse Gejl, where they confront their own narratives – and the prejudices that keep them in place. How stories shape who we are – and who we become.

About the directors: Brothers Olof and Fred Bendz began their careers directing music videos in their hometown of Malmö. Today they write and direct films that explore life’s absurdities and contradictions through a mix of humor and emotional depth.

Synopsis: Sami splits his life between a prestigious university and a downtown Hip Hop studio. During a physics lecture, he becomes convinced he’s come up with the greatest rap punchline ever written. The problem is, no one understands it. He sets out on an obsessive mission to make it understood, only to find himself caught in the growing gap between his two worlds.

About the directors: Fridtjof Stensæth Josefsen is a Norwegian comedian and filmmaker who has created and performed in several sketch comedies over the past decade. The short film Trio is part of his first solo project, a series of short films made in collaboration with Oslo-based director Morten Borgestad.

Synopsis: All good things come in threes. Or do they?

About the director: Hedda works fluidly between documentary and fiction and lets each story intuitively find its own shape and language. Her aim is to portray serious subjects in unexpected, absurd ways.

Synopsis: Stockholm isn’t what it used to be. Once cool and charismatic, it now feels polished and tired. Hedda searches for the city’s remaining soul and finds it at the vibrant club Melodybox in Hägersten, where the night still pulses with Micke, Mats, and a cat who might be David Bowie.

Synopsis: Young locksmith Anders is called to aid the authorities with a forced removal. His job is solely to open the door, but as the situation unfolds he is faced with a dilemma: by doing his job, is he enabling a harmful situation forced upon an innocent family?

  • 17:50 Next Generation of Programmers interviews Nefise Özkal Lorentzen (director) and crew of This Is Not an Apple 

About the director: Nefise Özkal Lorentzen is a Turkish-Norwegian filmmaker. Over the past two decades, she has produced and directed several controversial documentary films connected to Islam. Her films have premiered at prestigious festivals such as IDFA, CPH:DOX, Hot Docs, San Francisco FF, the Gothenburg Film Festival, Hot Springs, One World, and Movies That Matter, among many others. She has been nominated for the History Makers Award in New York.

Synopsis: After a knife attack by former friends, two Palestinian brothers face a crucial decision: to seek revenge or to offer forgiveness. The Palestinian siblings Reda, Yahya and Maria, live in a Norwegian suburb marked by gang related violence. Their sense of safety is shattered when the brothers are stabbed by former friends. Caught between pain and anger, they struggle with their mother’s call to forgive.

About the director: Director Perttu Inkilä works in the intersection of documentary and the imagined. He approaches his craft focusing on the subconscious impact that light, movement, and color have on the viewers, rather than informative storytelling.

Synopsis: The fall of a tiny droplet, the flight of a mosquito, or the rustle of a mouse’s footsteps – these are the most beautiful sounds of all. After losing his sight, Lauri feared also losing his connection to nature, but through the work of a sound recordist he has found a way to forge an even deeper bond with it. With his ears, Lauri “sees” things in nature that the eye cannot capture. The film opens a door to a world where nature’s most beautiful moments take centre stage.
