Let’s Talk…Who Shapes the City?

Cities and neighbourhoods are a mirror of society. They can expose social and economic inequalities, but also be a place of community and belonging. How are Nordic cities shaping community building and neighbourhoods today? 

2018 Denmark approves a law on parallel societies, allowing the government to target residential areas with a large number of ethnic minorities to demolish housing and remove residents deemed “non-Westerns”. Tingbjerg has been a resident area in Copenhagen since the 1970s and is a part of the city affected by the law on parallel societies.

The law has been highly criticised by Amnesty International and it has recently been ruled by the European Court of Justice as a violation of one of the foundational EU laws that guarantees “equal treatment between persons irrespective of racial or ethnic origin”. 

Join us to discuss these topics together with Helamalmö, a local organisation working with young people in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, Setlementtiasunnot, a Finnish organisation that builds housing with community and sustainability in mind, and Tapio Salonen, senior professor in social work and researcher in; welfare state, marginalisation and social interventions.
