In a support group for mothers of so-called “school refusers,” experiences are shared about children unable and unwilling to meet society’s expectations. These mothers have tried everything – forcing, persuading and bargaining. Here, words are given to overwhelming emotions: losing their footing, struggling against hurricane-force resistance and drowning in the effort to help their child return to school. There is comfort in being seen and heard by other mothers who refuse to let go.
